There are several choices for HD online video. The leader in HD content and we mean full 1080p HD is Vudu. It originated in its own proprietary box but now has become an app available across a wide range of devices like Bluray DVD players and internet enabled TVs and is expanding in all the places Netflix streaming is available. Netflix streaming is of course limited in content availability but is an all you can eat package for now. The HD on Netflix is not 1080p and is determined by the speed of your connection.
AppleTV has a large variety of content and availability in standard and HD. The HD is only 720p right now. Out of the box the Apple TV is set to provide the HD rental choice only it is usually about $1.00 more than the regular rental, but you can go in and change it. The rental and purchase options are a bit more expensive on Vudu then Apple but they do have the highest quality video so this may be a small price to pay to appreciate the investment in HD equipment.
Of course its nice to own the movie sometimes, but lacking physical media purchasing from Vudu doesn’t seem like a very sure thing. Purchasing from Apple seems like a much safer bet right now given there world dominance.
